他動詞 · Transitive Verb (Direct Action)
Object + を[Person] は / が [Object] を [他動詞]
Somebody intentionally DOES the action TO an object. Always look for a direct object marked with を.
私がドアを開けました。 — I opened the door.
自動詞 · Intransitive Verb (Natural State / Event)
Subject + が[Subject / Thing] が [自動詞]
Something happens by itself (focus on the thing changing state, NOT who did it). The thing takes が — never を!
ドアが開きました。 — The door opened.

Resulting States: 〜ている vs. 〜てある
[Thing] が + 自動詞 (〜ている) — Natural Resulting State (“It is open / on / broken”)
窓が開いています。 (The window is open.)電気がついています。 (The light is on.)
[Thing] が / を + 他動詞 (〜てある) — Intentional Prepared State (“Someone left it open on purpose”)
窓が開けてあります。 (The window has been left open (on purpose).)ホテルが予約してあります。 (The hotel has been booked (in advance).)
3 Suffix Families to Spot Transitivity Instantly
- Pattern A: -asu / -osu / -esu → ALWAYS Transitive: Verbs ending in -su (消す・落とす・壊す・出す・直す) are almost 100% Transitive (を)!
- Pattern B: -aru → ALWAYS Intransitive (paired with -eru): When a pair contrasts -eru vs. -aru, -aru is Intransitive (が) and -eru is Transitive (を).
- Pattern C: Flip Pair (-eru Transitive vs. -u Intransitive): Longer Ichidan (-eru) is often Transitive, while shorter Godan (-u) is Intransitive (watch out for 焼く/焼ける!).
!Classic Classroom Traps
Never Mark the Subject of an Intransitive Verb with を!
✗授業を始まりました。 / ドアを開いています。
✓授業が始まりました。 (The class started.)
✓先生が授業を始めました。 (The teacher started the class.)
Intransitive verbs (始まる・開く・閉まる・つく) cannot take a direct object with を — the thing changing state takes が.
Same Kanji, Different Reading! (入れる vs. 入る · 開ける vs. 開く)
✗コーヒーに砂糖を入れます。
✓コーヒーに砂糖を入れます。 (put sugar in — Transitive)
✓お風呂に入ります。 (get into the bath — Intransitive)
Check the okurigana after the kanji: 入れる (put in) vs. 入る (go in); 出す (take out) vs. 出る (go out).
